Understanding IP addresses
What is an IP address?
An IP address is the identifier your device uses on the internet, like a return address on an envelope. Every request you make carries your public IP so servers know where to send the reply. It’s assigned by your internet provider, not chosen by you.
Why does my location look wrong?
IP geolocation maps an address to network infrastructure, not to you personally. It often resolves to the city of your provider’s regional hub, which can be tens or hundreds of kilometres away. This is normal and not a privacy breach — it simply isn’t precise.
What changes my IP?
Your home IP can change when your router reconnects (most consumer connections use dynamic IPs). A VPN or proxy replaces your IP with the server’s, which is why this tool may show a different country when one is active. Mobile networks rotate IPs frequently.
What do the security signals mean?
The VPN, Proxy, Tor, and Hosting flags indicate whether an IP belongs to an anonymizing service or a datacenter rather than a home line. None of these is inherently malicious — millions use VPNs legitimately — but a hosting or Tor flag on traffic that claims to be a normal user can be a useful warning sign.
ASN and AS name
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) identifies the network operator that controls a block of IPs — a more precise identity than the ISP label. Security professionals use it to attribute traffic to a specific organisation or hosting provider.
How this tool works
This lookup queries a public IP intelligence service over HTTPS and shows you the result. When you check your own IP, only your IP is resolved; when you look up another address, that address is sent to the service. No results are stored by Cyberscan.
